Tinubu Orders Security Overhaul at NIPSS After Deadly Bandit Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly ordered an immediate and comprehensive security overhaul at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), following a deadly bandit attack that shocked the policy institution’s campus in Kuru, Plateau State.

The directive comes after armed assailants allegedly infiltrated areas close to the institute, leading to casualties and raising fresh concerns about the safety of high-level national training and policy environments. Security operatives were said to have responded, but the incident exposed significant gaps in surveillance and perimeter protection.

According to early government briefings, the President has instructed security agencies, including the police and military intelligence units, to strengthen intelligence gathering, deploy advanced monitoring systems, and reinforce all critical academic and strategic national institutions.

The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS)), Nigeria’s top policy think-tank, is now expected to undergo a full audit of its security architecture. Officials say recommendations will include expanded perimeter fencing, biometric access control, and rapid-response deployment units stationed nearby.

The Federal Government described the attack as unacceptable, stressing that institutions responsible for shaping national leadership must not be exposed to violent threats. Investigations into the attackers’ identities and possible network links are currently ongoing.

Security analysts say the incident reflects broader insecurity challenges in parts of northern Nigeria and calls for coordinated intelligence-led operations to prevent future breaches.
