Insecurity: Nigeria Bleeding, Confused, Minority Reps Lament
The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has raised fresh alarm over worsening insecurity across Nigeria, describing the nation as âbleeding and confusedâ amid rising cases of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and communal clashes.
Speaking during a press briefing at the National Assembly, the lawmakers expressed concern that despite repeated government assurances and increased security spending, attacks on rural communities and highways have continued unabated. They warned that citizens in several states now live in fear, with farmers abandoning farmlands and traders avoiding inter-state routes.
The caucus noted that security agencies appear overstretched and under-coordinated, calling for urgent reforms in intelligence sharing, policing structure, and community-based security frameworks. They also urged the federal government to prioritize modern surveillance technology and better welfare for security personnel.
According to the lawmakers, the human and economic toll of insecurity is deepening national hardship, disrupting food supply chains, education, and local commerce. They called for bipartisan collaboration to address what they described as a ânational emergency beyond politics.â
The minority reps further appealed for immediate deployment of targeted security operations in high-risk zones, while urging leaders at all levels to stop politicizing insecurity and focus on solutions.
