Dangote Imported 1.46bn Litres of Blended Gasoline – NMDPRA

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has disclosed that Dangote Petroleum Refinery imported about 1.46 billion litres of gasoline blendstock between January and May 2026, despite rising domestic crude supply.

According to industry data from NMDPRA’s latest midstream and downstream statistics, the refinery—owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote—relied on imported intermediate products used in petrol production to sustain high output levels during the period.

The report showed that the refinery imported 658.31 million litres in January, 306.89 million litres in February, 102.35 million litres in March, 147.37 million litres in April, and 240.59 million litres in May, bringing the total to approximately 1.46 billion litres.

NMDPRA noted that gasoline blendstock is not sold directly to consumers but is a key input used in refining processes to produce Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) that meets required quality standards.

The data also indicated that Dangote Refinery operated at an average capacity utilisation of 101.25% in May, producing about 44.7 million litres of petrol daily, while still relying on imported blend components to optimise output.

Analysts say the trend reflects a strategic balancing act between crude availability and imported intermediates, allowing the refinery to maintain near-full production capacity amid fluctuating feedstock supply.

The development comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen local refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported finished petroleum products.
